#ippp: strange little band of characters

Welcome to #iPPP! Gfunkified and I want to see your funny, your yummy, your heartfelt, your favorite phone photos of the week. All you need is a blog post containing at least one photo from any phone camera. Link up below!

“The family. We were a strange little band of characters trudging through life sharing diseases and toothpaste, coveting one another’s desserts, hiding shampoo, borrowing money, locking each other out of our rooms, inflicting pain and kissing to heal it in the same instant, loving, laughing, defending, and trying to figure out the common thread that bound us all together.”

~~Erma Bombeck

This Sunday my friend, Emily, my friend Shannon (owner of Mama’s Hip) and I are co-facilitating a local mother’s writing workshop called Mothers at the Well. If I were to speak technically I’d say that this workshop explores the rite of passage into motherhood. It’ll be a workshop in which we’ll explore our own journeys through motherhood in order to discover our emerging identities and create community. But phew. What a mouthful. And much too official sounding for the likes of this blog.

To speak informally about this workshop I’ll tell you it’s going to kick ass. We Mamas are going to gather. We’re going to relax. We’re going to get real. Get all nice and cozy. We’re going to relax and write. We’re going to relax and share our writing. We’re going to relax and learn from each other. We’re going to relax and think about ourselves. For a change.

And did I mention we’re going to relax? I’m talking a little bit of Tai Chi relaxation. A little bit of guided imagery meditation relaxation.

We are going to take a good. Soft. Look inward and see who’s looking back. We’re going to gather. We’re going to write. And we’re going to freaking become.

Become.

Become what?

Become….

Eh, that’s what the workshop is for. [Insert smart-alecky smiley face here.]

This morning Emily, Shannon and I met to put the finishing touches on this workshop series we’ve created together. But there’s just one more thing I volunteered to do. I offered to find an opening quote or a poem, maybe part  of an essay for our greeting/welcoming.

Friends, I’m in need of some sacred words about motherhood or writing or both.

Names like Anne Lamott and Erma Bombeck have been tossed into the ring. (That’s how I stumbled upon the quote above. Isn’t it sassy and endearing mixed together? Like a slap and a cuddle all at once. That’s exactly what family is. And I love it.)

But I’m wondering do YOU have a favorite quote about motherhood? Or writing? Or a piece from a writerly Mama that speaks to your heart?

Please share it with me now and maybe it will become part of our workshop.

p.s. I wish you ALL could attend. I really do. Mom Power!

  • I SO wish I could be there! You mamas are going to kick ass. And I have to say that that picture cracks. me. up. I KNOW you have to have another cart, because you’re obviously at Sam’s or Costco or someplace, right? And I KNOW you didn’t just go for Clorox Wipes! :D

So yep. We were at Sam’s. You’re good. Sometimes we get another cart, if it’s a big haul. But this particular trip we just needed some non-perishables. Diapers, wipes, paper towels, toilet paper, cleaning supplies. We eventually kicked a few kids out of the cart. For goodness sake Leo does NOT need to ride–he could barely fit. But he just couldn’t walk and play his game at the same time…poor dude, right? Yeah. Get out of the cart.

  • First of all – LOVE the picture and the quote with it.
    And what an awesome quote!

    Your workshop sounds just awesome.
So, I was watching Oprah last Sunday night and she was interviewing Drew Barrymore and they were talking about Drew’s childhood and how fucked up it was and how her own daughter was not going to grow up that way. BECAUSE “when you get the love and support you want there is really no *need* for drugs and alcohol”. Oprah is such a smart woman and what she said there really touched me.
It made me think of my kids, especially my daughter who has to make choices every day which path she will take now and I’ve been so happy with how she chooses. Because for her, there is no need as well and what else can you ask for as a mother?

I’m with you Kerstin. It’s all about creating the life you want. Eff the past. Each day is new. Your daughter is SO FORTUNATE to have you as a mom. I’m imagining all the big and small things she’ll do with her life :)
You, me and Oprah forever. Hahaha.

  • Alison says:

I wish I could be there and kick ass alongside you!

    I’m a quote whore. I love them.

I came across a few recently that I love:

“Either write something worth reading, or do something worth writing.” ~ Benjamin Franklin
“The role of a writer is not to say what we all can say, but what we are unable to say.” ~ Anais Nin
“Write what should not be forgotten.” ~ Isabel Allende
“Writers end up writing about their obsessions. Things that haunt them; things they can’t forget; stories they carry in their bodies waiting to be released.” ~ Natalie Goldberg
“To live a creative life, we must first lose the fear of being wrong.” ~ Joseph Chilton Pearce
“Write what you know. Write what you want to know more about. Write what you’re afraid to write about.” ~ Cec Murphy

    So excited for you!

Thank you Alison! Those are some goodies. I love your quote whore ways. I might just add a few of those in! Oh, and Joseph Chilton Pearce? One of my idols :)

  • Kerry B says:

OMG I WANT TO GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And no I don’t have a wonderful quote. My Mother always said things like “you are a street angle and a house devil” or “parenthood is a life sentence” My Mom is amazing and kind and wonderful and would do anything to see her children and grandchildren happy. You will find something divine I’m sure of it! She also told me things would happen just when they were supposed to and it will. Share once you find it!

wish you could come Kerry! I will definitely share what I go with! Also, thank you for sharing those quotes from your mom. She sound like a wonderful human being :)

  • Ducky says:

That is one FULL cart!! Sounds like an amazing time. I look forward to hearing more about it!!

    • Sarah says:

I know. I know. We shoved some people out so as to make more room for stuff. My oldest definitely doesn’t need to be riding. But he’s trying to play a game on the tablet. And it’s so hard to walk and play a game on your tablet all at the same time. sheesh.

  • Elaine A. says:

I’ve got this… It was a poem we used at a Blessingway (I’m guessing you know what that is) for a friend of mine last year…

    There Will Be Time
    There is time still
    for sitting in cafes
    in Paris
    sipping wine.
    Time still
    for going to meet
    the guru.
    There is time still.
Now I am caring for eternity.
    Carrying bodies soft with sleep
    to beds of flowered
    quilts and pillows.
    Answering cries deep out of
    nighttime fears.
    Buckling shoes.
    Opening doors.
    Pretending.
My soul now is dwelling in
    the house of tomorrow.
    Tomorrow there will be time
    for long leisurely conversations,
    for poems to write,
    and dances to perform.
    Time still.
    So I surrender now
    to them and this,
    knowing it is they
    who will teach me
    how to do it all.
    Peggy O’Mara

Hope the workshop goes wonderfully. And check YOU out getting ALL the kids in the cart! You’re a rockstar!!! :D

  • Sounds like a fantastic workshop you are all putting together!

I’ve gotten lost in the sea of Google (for the millionth time today), looking at Motherhood quotes, and all I keep thinking about are the hundreds of lines I’ve read about special small familial moments on Galit’s blog, These Little Waves.

I actually thought about spending some time on Galit’s blog–she’s good for this kind of stuff :) I can get lost in the sea of google too. I’m really good at it. Don’t you wish you could get paid for doing something like that? Haha. Thanks for the suggestion. And I do wish you could attend!

  • Sounds so much fun. Wish I could be there. As a biological mom and an adoptive mom I’ll share the poem that an older women who was an adoptive mom gave me when we got out daughter. Who just turned 12 yesterday on the 29th.

    Not flesh of my flesh
    nor bone of my bone,
    but still miraculously my own.

Never forget for a single minute,
that you grew not under my heart,
    but in it.

Ohmy. Those words are gorgeous. Thank you truly for sharing. I might work that quote in somehow. lovely and kind of haunting too. Also, happy belated birthday to your daughter ~xox

  • Katie E says:

The workshop sounds amazing! Enjoy it – I’m sure you will :)
I love that shopping cart picture – and the quote you shared below it.
I like this Diane Keaton quote (not about writing, but motherhood) – I’m pretty passive, except when it comes to issues that affect my kids!
Motherhood has completely changed me. It’s just about like the most completely humbling experience that I’ve ever had. I think that it puts you in your place because it really forces you to address the issues that you claim to believe in and if you can’t stand up to those principles when you’re raising a child, forget it.

A cart full of gorgeous babies? Yes, please!

That is one of my all time favorite quotes. I used it in the slide show I made for my family a few years ago. Love love love it. And I’m so jealous of your workshop! It sounds really awesome!

yeah, I’m totally digging erma bombeck these days. I really wish I could bring all ya’ll with me. I’ll blog about if for sure, but it’s not the same.

  • That sounds awesome. I’m all about mama’s sticking together to find themselves, because it’s sad when a mama loses touch with herself as a woman…I firmly believe you can be both, and knowing who you are makes you a better Mom. There’ sno reason we should have to sacrifice ourselves entirely to our children…motherhood and mamahood can coexist wonderfully :)

Can’t wait to hear about more about your workshop! Sounds like you guys are putting together quite the grand time!! I don’t have any good quotes, being a math dork and all, but if you need any equations solved I’m TOTALLY your gal *grin*.
